Belgium finish in style in the League Round

Article

Belgium finished in the style in the League Round of the Golden #EuroLeagueM. The hosts of the Final Four tournament that will take place on June 19-20 in Kortrijk (BEL), outclassed Spain in three sets, and with a better performance in all the components, congratulated themselves with the victory after 86 minutes of play in the Liepaja Olympic Centre (LAT).

Spain were close to tying the score in the last set, losing several set points, but it was in these moments when the players around head coach Fernando Muñoz Benitez showed nerves of steel and grabbed the victory, finishing with 51% efficiency on the winning spikes in the match. Mathijs Desmet from Belgium finished as Top Scorer with 14 points to his name, while his teammate Jolan Cox added 11. For Spain, Alejandro Vigil recorded 12.

- It was a close call in the beginning of the first set (13-13), but Belgium's Ferre Reggers contributed a lot for his team's good performance. The Red Dragoons could emerge victorious, with Reggers finishing in this part with 5 points. Lennert Van Elsen also added 5, while for Spain Francisco Iribarne was giving it his best also finishing in this set with 5 points.
- Both teams showed good skills in the next set, but Belgium were more precise on the net, and with 3 kill blocks got closer to the victory.
- Spain were more stable on the court in the last set. They would even lead at 20-18 but lost concentration for a moment, and Jolan Cox with an ace helped Belgium to take a lead at 21-20. It wasn't over and Spain put up a real fight in the last minutes, missing several set points. Belgium remained calmer and grabbed the victory.

“Today was a fun game and my teammates helped me a lot. We showed good play on defence in the first and the third set, while in the second we pushed on the serve. Tomas Rousseaux helped a lot today."

Liam Mc Cluskey
Setter of Belgium

“It was a little bit harder than what we were expecting. We could have done much better, we couldn't "light our fire" on the court today."
Angel Trinidad de Haro,
Setter of Spain
