Match Report

Belgium survive a nail-biting Volleyball thriller vs Spain

Article

On Saturday, Belgium and Spain delivered a great Volleyball battle in Pool A as both teams showed a real fighting spirit, entertaining with nice rallies the Golden #EuroLeagueM fans who were following the match live on EuroVolley.TV. The Red Dragons from Belgium could emerge victorious in four sets (winning at 3-1) but Spain were close to bringing the fixture into a tiebreak. In what can be called a cat-and-mouse game, both Belgium and Spain were breathing down each other's necks keeping the intrigue in each set alive. A slightly better performance on the attack (65) became the key to the success for the Dragons. Spain's August Renato Colito finished with 27 points to his name, but his outstanding performance wasn't enough to turn things around. This is a second win for Belgium at the tournament in Estonia, while Spain are yet to record a victory.

- As in their first match of this year's edition of the Golden #EuroLeagueM, Spain started again good on the block and were showing good skills on the attack. None of the teams gave up during the whole set (11-11, 22-22) and it was Colito and Sam Deroo of Belgium who were shining on attack in these moments.

- Same scenario unfolded in the second set. The players coached by Ricardo Maldonado kept on pushing hard on the block (3) becoming this element a key to tying the score.

-Belgium responded immediately and finished the fourth set with 17 winning spikes. 5 aces by Spain weren't enough in this part and the Dragoons took again the leadership.

- A real Volleyball battle was delivered in the last minutes of the match. Spain missed several set points, and thus the opportunity to play a tie-break, while Belgium also had bad luck in closing the match various times. In the end however, thanks to 6 blocks in total, Belgium found their way and despite the inspired Spanish play on attack, grabbed the victory.

Borja Ruiz, opposite of Spain: “It was a difficult match and we showed good fight as a team. In the decisive moments, small details made the difference in the result. The fourth set was a real thriller and could have gone either way. We lost to a very good team. Our goal is still to make it to the Final Four, so we have to win tomorrow and also play well in the next tournament in Latvia.”

Kobe Brems, setter of Belgium: “Of course, we are very happy that we won. We had a bad start today in all the sets and we were struggling. But in the end our block-defence improved and I think this was one of the keys for the win. It's a big opportunity for me to play next to the stars like Sam Deroo and Tomas Rousseaux, they support younger and less experienced like me. I think we have a good mix of younger and more experienced players."
