    This was not an easy win, because Ankara was very strong in defense, especially in the first two sets. Everyone told me we still have a chance to qualify for the quarter finals, but that will be a hell of a job. Therefore, we have to beat Jastrzebski next week and you know: Jastrzebski proved to be stronger than Zenit Kazan twice. I needn’t tell you more.

    With a 3-1 win over Halkbank ANKARA, Greenyard MAASEIK recorded their third victory in pool C. With this new success, the Belgian champions took over the second spot in their group at the expense of Zenit KAZAN. With one more home game, against Jastrzebski Wegiel next week, Maaseik even stays in the race for the quarterfinals.
    With the newly recruited Slovenian opposite Toncek Stern on court, ANKARA immediately showed their ambition of conquering a first victory in this Champions League, going up 18-20 in the first set. But Jan Zimmermann levelled at 20 with a mighty block and with three strong serves, Robert Wojcik led Maaseik to 23-20 and 25-22.
    Ankara exploited its block capacities (6 vs. 1 in set the first set) also in set 2: Abdullah Cam and Ibrahim Emet built up an early 4-10 lead. Maaseik clawed backed: two Scandinavians, substitute Rasmus Breuning Nielsen and Jonas Kvalen turned the tide with 3 aces: 21-20. In an incredible finish Maaseik wasted five set points, before Emet converted the 7th occasion for Ankara: 34-36.
    The locals wanted to avoid another bad surprise and stormed away to a 12-7 lead in the third set. With substitute Gökhan Gökgoz on serve, Stern threatened Maaseik until 21-19. But an ace by Andri Aganits offered Maaseik the win: 25-21.
    Wojcik, top scorer with 24 points, and Nielsen repeated the violent start of the third set for an early 9-5 in the fourth, with Yuri Semeniuk adding an ace for 14-6. Ankara didn’t surrender, Stern and Gökgöz clawed back until 17-14, but Semeniuk showed his team the way to glory: 25-18.
